Flooded Basement Cleanup Checklist for Connecticut Homeowners

By The Magic Molds · Connecticut mold, water and fire restoration

Safety first

  • Don't enter standing water if outlets or the panel may be submerged.
  • If sewage is involved, don't enter without protection. Call for Sewage Cleanup.

Pump-out

Small amounts can be handled with a sump or utility pump. More than a couple of inches across a finished basement is a job for professional flooded basement cleanup with truck-mounted extraction.

What to throw away

  • Wet carpet and pad
  • Wet drywall and insulation (cut 12–24 inches above the water line)
  • Cardboard, particle board furniture, mattresses

What can be saved

  • Solid wood furniture
  • Concrete and block walls (cleaned and treated)
  • Framing lumber if dried within days

Drying and mold prevention

Run dehumidifiers and fans continuously. Target under 50% humidity. Apply antimicrobial to framing. If you're past 48 hours, plan on basement mold removal.

Insurance

Groundwater flooding typically needs flood insurance. Sump-pump failure needs a rider. See our guide on insurance coverage.
